| BJP concerned over people buying water | | Indo-Pak relations used to be cat and mouse game between BJP and Congress | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 18: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) today castigated the National Conference- Congress government for ruining the fresh water sources across Jammu and Kashmir. BJP's Kashmir spokesman Khalid Jehangir in a statement here said, "Despite Kashmir being a water rich place, people are being forced to drink mineral water as the government is unable to provide drinking water fit for the human consumption." Jehangir, while referring to the recent incidents of people falling sick at Trehgam in Kupwara and Choon in Budgam area, said, "More than 1500 people fell sick after consuming the contaminated water. This shows lackadaisical attitude of the people at the helm." Jehangir said, "Many people across JK drink packaged water to save themselves from falling sick." He said that Omar Abdullah in 2008 raised the slogan of Bijli Sadak and Pani. "He (Omar) had assured the people that he would provide good governance if his party forms the government. During the past five and a half years power tariff has increased manifolds, roads are in shambles and people have to buy drinking water to save themselves from the water borne diseases." Jehangir lamented that fresh water springs which were the main sources of drinking water have become extinct. "It is sad that government even failed to protect the fresh water springs," he added. Khalid demanded that government should take immediate steps to redress the issue of providing basic amenities to people and providing clean drinking water to people should top the agenda.
