| SKIMS faculty humiliated, hounded out MCI assessors | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Aug 18: Habituated of violating norms and turning street fights into battle for Azadi, management of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura not only humiliated college assessment team of Medical Council of India (MCI) but virtually hounded them out of the institute.
The faculty led by Director of the Institute Dr. Showkat Zargar did not cooperate with the assessors on the day of the inspection i.e. May 30 and 31, 2014. They refused to allow the assessors namely Dr. P.E. Natekar and Dr. Ashok Anand to check original certificates and used harsh language while replying to the queries. Dr. P.E. Natekar is Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Grant Medical College (GMC) Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The other assessor Dr. Ashok Anand is Professor and Head of the Department (HOD) of Anatomy in Government Medical College (GMC) Panaji, Goa. Both the assessors have officially communicated these happenings to the Medical Council of India (MCI) in their assessment report of the physical and other teaching facilities available in SKIMS for renewal of permission for admission of 2nd batch against the increased intake i.e. from 50 to 100 MBBS students for year 2014-15.
They have concluded the assessment report by referring to the untoward incident faced by them on the day of inspection i.e. May 30 and 31. They have stated that there was no cooperation from the staff members at the time of inspection. They have referred their request for checking originals and stated Dean outrightly and harshly refused saying that no originals are to be checked. He did not stop here but went on to add that here was no need to check the originals.
He even asked the two assessors who are senior faculty members in their respective colleges to explain reason for coming to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). They have stated in the report Dr. P.E. Natekar was humiliated by a lecturer namely Dr. Ashfaq-ul-Hassan of the Anatomy department. According to the report, Hassan pooh-poohed intellectual level of Natekar saying that he had minimal level of intelligence and hence, was not expected to behave in any better way.
He said this in the presence of most of the members of the senior faculties; the two have said in the report while adding that none from the faculty which was sitting at the site of the incidence told the doctor to apologise. The doctor was allowed to go scott free while the assessors were advised to behave. Principal of the Institute Dr. Showkat Zargar too added salt to the wounds.
He instead of taking the faculty to task told Dr. Ashok Anand that he too had been doing Medical Council of India (MCI) inspections. "We have been doing MCI inspections since many years but nobody had asked for original certificates," Dr. Showkat Zargar argued with the assessors in the presence of faculty members. He angrily told the assessors to explain reasons for coming to SKIMS for inspection.
"Why have you come to this place? You should not have come to this place for inspection," Dr. Showkat told the two assessors in the presence of faculty members. On being asked, Dr. Ashok Anand confirmed the incident and said that they have mentioned everything in the report. "Everything is in the report. There is nothing for me to share with you beyond this that the inspection was carried out on a gazetted holiday. We have submitted our report to MCI for action," said Dr. Ashok Anand. |
