| 6324 girls, 7822 boys without toilet facility; 4350 toilets lying defunct | | Poonch, Baramulla, Udhampur, Reasi school see least construction of toilets | | Bivek Mathur
Jammu, Aug 18 : Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech has shown concern over degrading toilet facilities in some schools of India, particularly the schools having no toilet facility for girls because of which many of them are quitting studies at an alarming rate, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as well as Education Minister Tara Chand, it seems, need another decade or two to plan a strategy to construct the same as the situation is worsening in the case of Jammu and Kashmir. As per a data available on the website of Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD)-DISE data, 6,324 schools in Jammu and Kashmir sans girls' toilet facility and 7,822 schools are without boys' toilet facility. As per figures, 2,797 Girls toilet in the schools of Jammu and Kashmir are lying defunct and 1,553 boys toilets are craving for reconstruction adding to the total figure of 4,350 toilets lying defunct. Among the poor of the poorest districts having nearing no toilet facility are Baramulla with 678 schools without girls' toilet facility and 572 schools without toilet facility for boys. Further 79 girls' toilets are lying defunct and 73 boys' toilets are lying defunct in the district. Poonch district of Jammu province tops the chart with 1096 schools without toilet facility for boys with 707 girls' toilets and 88 boys' toilets lying defunct. Udhampur and Reasi districts are among the poor districts in case of non- availability of toilet facility for girls and boys. As far as Udhampur district is concerned, a total number of 1459 schools, 595 girls are without toilet facility and 849 boys are without toilet facility with 355 toilets for girls' and 145 toilets for boys' are lying defunct. In case of Reasi district, with a total figure of 1096 schools; 615 girls child and 751 boys are without toilet facility with 199 girls' toilets and 109 toilets for boys lying defunct. Bandipora and Badgam districts are among the two districts having 100 per cent toilet facility. The figures for the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar are also not satisfactory as in case of Srinagar district, of total 503 schools, 172 schools are without girls' toilet facility and 50 schools are wiyhout toilet facility for boys. In case of Jammu district, of 1507 total number of schools, 300 schools are without separate girls toilet facility and 354 schools are without boys toilet facility with 129 girls and 158 boys toilets lying defunct. |
