| Woman dies in domestic violence, SHO refuses to register case | | CRIME AGAINST WOMEN | | Saahil Suhail
Srinagar, Oct 2: A family in Anantnag town today alleged that despite directions from Senior Superintend of Police (SSP), a police official refused to register a case into the death of a woman due to alleged domestic violence. 38- year- old Ayesha Akther, died at her maternal house in Anantnag town on September 4 after prolonged illness during the devastating floods, family members told Early Times. "After the death of my sister, I approached SSP Anantnag with a written complaint against her in-laws who marked it to SHO Anantnag but later police official posted in Police post Sherbagh refused to register an FIR and suggested us to settle the issue," Khursheed Ahmad Chicken, brother of deceased lady alleged. He said that her sister died because of the domestic violence she faced at the hands of her in-laws and because of the apathy that they showed in administering treatment to her as she was diagnosed with cancer. "My sister was diagnosed with cancer but her husband and in-laws instead of providing treatment to her used to neglect and exploit her." alleged, Khursheed. "They kept me in dark about my disease despite feeling unwell and used to tell me to carry on with domestic chores," Akther said in a video interview on her bed, arranged by her brother days before her death. Deceased in video alleges that her husband was harassing her since the day they married and left her alone in the room during the days when she was suffering from cancer. Family members demanded through probe, stern punishment to Gowher Saleem Hagroo-husband of the deceased, besides action against the erring officer who refused to register an FIR. Family also appealed state women's commission to take cognizance of the matter. |
