Rajouri, Oct 2: Tension brewed up in Jawahar Nagar area of Rajouri town after district administration denied permission to burn the effigies of Ravan and others on Dussehra on the land whose title was disputed.
Members of Ram Leela committee, senior citizens and youth were adamant to burn the effigies reportedly on the disputed land as they claimed that the land in question was a pasture and nobody could claim its ownership.
People also claimed that for the last many years they were burning the effigies of Ravan and others on Dussehra.
Bharat Bhushan Vaid , BJP district head , social worker and prominent citizen of Jawahar Nagar said, "In the morning the matter was brought into the notices of Deputy Commissioner, SSP and others and they promised to take a decision by the evening."
As nothing was heard from the administration, people blocked the main road at Jawahar Nagar at 5.30 pm and also stopped vehicular traffic.
At 5.45 pm people lifted the blockade and decided to close their shops in protest and to organize demonstration against the district administration.
Later people led by Bharat Bhushan, Dinesh Sharma, Sanatan Dharam Sabha president etc. met AK Attri, DIG, Rajouri-Poonch police range in the presence of Jitender K Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Saleem Malik, ADDC, Shiv Kumar, ASP and others.
Bharat Bhushan and others warned the administration that they will not change the venue but can confine the ritual to some of the portion of the same land.
The land is about 85 kanals and some people claim that the land belonged to them while Bharat Bhushan and others claim that the land belonged to Government.
Bharat added that these persons had managed entries of ownership of the disputed land in nexus with Patwari concern but the entries were not authenticated by the concerned Tehsildar.
Meanwhile, the administration has offered three options to the people which include BSF ground, PHE ground and a corner of the disputed land.
Sources also added that Deputy Commissioner had proposed to impose section 145RPC on the disputed land which was objected to by the representatives , prolonging the stalemate between representatives and administration.
Later DIG and Deputy Commissioner briefed the members of delegations about the legal issues of the disputed land and advised the delegation members to celebrate Dusshera either at BSF or at PHE ground this year.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner reportedly imposed section 145 RPC and took control of the disputed land. On the request of the district administration people agreed to celebrate Dussehra at PHE ground to defuse the brewing tension.
