| Girl killed, 4 hurt in renewed shelling, firing on LoC | | | MS Nazki POONCH, Oct 3: In the heavy Pak shelling and firing, that resumed after a lull of over 40 hours, a girl was today killed and four others were wounded on the Line of Control (LoC) in Sabzian sub-sector of Poonch. Eight persons were injured in the Pak shelling and firing in Sabzian sub-sector on Wednesday night. There was no firing yesterday but Pakistan, without any provocation, resorted to heavy shelling and firing this afternoon, targeting forward Indian posts and residential areas along the LoC in Sabzian area. Official sources said Pakistan opened heavy volume of fire, followed by shelling, at about 2 pm. This time, apart from targeting the forward Indian posts, the enemy troops also shelled the residential areas, including Gagrian from where some families had on Wednesday moved to safer places. Sources said a shell exploded in a house, resulting in the instant death of a 17-year-old girl who was identified as Zahida Akhtar, daughter of Shabir Ahmad of Gagrian. Four persons were injured in the Pak firing. They included Tariq Iqbal, son of Bashir Ahmad, Sherbaz, son of Abdul Majid, Ghulam Mohammad, son of Abdul Kabir, and Zulfikar Ahmad, son of Bashir Ahmad. All of them were admitted to the district hospital, Poonch. Sources said India returned the fire and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued till 5.40 pm. Casualty, if any, on the Pak side was yet to be ascertained, the sources added. The enemy fire had come from their Kobra I and Kobra II posts. Sources said as the Pak fire was aimed at providing cover to militants waiting on their side to sneak into the Indian territory, a tight vigil was being maintained all along the LoC to foil any intrusion bid. Sources claimed that the injured were shifted to hospital by Poonch MLA who was also in Gagrian area at the time of Pak firing. Sabzian had also witnessed heavy firing on August 26. |
