4 months on, Rayor villagers forced to drink filthy pond water | PHE fails to restore potable water supply | | G S Asgotra
Jammu, Oct 7: It might sound bizarre but it is true that nearly 62 households of village Rayor, panchayt Kard of district Samba have been forced to drink filthy water of a pond due to the apathy of Public Health and Engineering (PHE) Department which has failed to restore water supply for the last four months. Inhabitants of village Rayour told Early Times that for the last four months they were deprived of potable water and forced to depend on a pond water to quench their thirst and also for other uses. "The motor pump installed by the PHE department into a dugwell on Basantar river, from where water is supplied to village, has gone kaput", they said, adding that the villagers have been leading a very pathetic life and forced to drink water from the pond from where cattle used to drink water. Jattu (70), a villager, said that he was suffering from Tuberculosis (TB) for the past many years and doctors had suggested him to drink boiled but he was forced to drink muddy and contaminated water of pond. "Despite repeated reminders, the department is paying no heed to them", he alleged. He said that all other hamlets of panchyat Kard had been getting potable water supply by PHE department and only village Rayor was deprived of it. Source in the PHE department revealed that the shortfall of potable water was nearly 1.5 lakhs gallons per day and department has been generating 4.5 lakhs gallon potable water per day. Due to the large gap in demand and supply, some villages have to face shortage of water, sources said. When contracted, PHE Executive Engineer J S Chib said that after the recent flash floods, dugwells were damaged. As soon as these were repaired, the water supply would be restored, he assured. |
