Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 24 : Despite having spent crores of rupees on the construction of Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Transport Nagar, Narwal, and Bus Stand for Banihal and Katra route buses at Khanpur near Nagrota here, the coalition government has failed to make them operational.
The desired infrastructure is in place at both the places for the past a few years but these are lying unused.
Official sources said the two bus stands were ready for the last five years but the concerned agencies lacked the will to shift there inter-state buses and Banihal and Katra route buses from General Bus Stand at B C Road. The general public in the winter capital city is the worst sufferer due to the growing traffic mess on the busy BC Road, at KC Crossing and in Jewel Chowk area", sources said. "Since all the required infrastructure has been raised there, it is now the job of state transport and the divisional and the district administration to execute the orders and ensure operation of these two newly raised bus stands.
Rakesh Sharma of BC Road criticised the government for not making the two newly constructed bus stands operational. "Because of their non-functioning, the idle parking of buses and other vehicles at General Bus Stand, B C Road and in K C crossing area has been causing the worst traffic problem and it has been further aggravated by the unauthorized operation of Tata Sumos, taxis, tempo travellers and mini-buses in the area.
"The administration is not taking any interest to discourage idle parking on BC Road as a result of which the traffic problem continues to be there," he added. He said that if ISBT and Khanpur bus stand were made operational, the traffic load would certainly be reduced on B C Road and its nearby crossings.
Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu didn't respond despite repeated phone calls made to him.
