Geelani does a U-turn within 48 hours, dashes Omar's hopes | Poll boycott | | Neha Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 24: Only the other day, outgoing Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah hailed Syed Ali Shah Geelani, saying that he had withdrawn his poll boycott call and this decision of his would result in a high voter turnout and mar the BJP's poll prospects in the Valley. He had also expressed hope that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik whose constituency, he said is Srinagar, would also follow in the footsteps of Geelani and withdraw their boycott call. Mirwaiz and Malik, like Geelani, had also appealed to the Kashmiri electorate not to venture out of their houses on the polling day. On Friday, Geelani had cancelled the shutdown call on November 25, saying it was not in the interest of the Kashmiri Muslims. "Let people decide themselves what they want. It is on them to take our mission (the so-called Azadi movement) to a logical conclusion. I will not insist on poll boycott as it is not in the interest of Kashmiri Muslims," Geelani had said while cancelling the shutdown call of 25. It was this statement that Omar Abdullah appreciated. However, Geelani dashed all his hopes on Sunday when he did a U-turn and asked the Kashmiri electorate to boycott the polls on November 26 and in other four phases. "I appeal people to observe complete shutdown on November 25 in Ganderbal and Bandipora districts and hold protest demonstrations on evening of November 24 against upcoming election. In presence of arbitrary measures, arrests and detaining youth and political activists, the election has lost legality," he said in a statement. Why did Geelani does a U-turn within 48 hours? Why did he take a contradictory stand and reiterated his Friday's stand? Who made him does a U-turn? It appears that it was the desperate Islamabad that rebuked Geelani and asked him to do something in the Valley to ensure that there is a low or no poll on November 25. A high voter turnout in Kashmir would have gone against Pakistan, which has consistently maintained that the Kashmiri people have no interest in the electoral exercises and they only want referendum in Kashmir to decide their political future. |
