How quickly will BJP, NC, PDP swallow bitter pill ? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 24 : As political fortunes of 123 candidates get sealed in EVMs in 1787 polling stations in 15 assembly segments of seven districts of Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Leh and Kargil today, one will have to wait for results till December 23 when votes polled are counted for these seats. Yet, the present J&K election being held in five phases is going to be the most interesting because whatever the outcome of these polls, one reality is striking hard at the door of every regional party in the State. The BJP is emerging as a major player in these elections whose emergence might fall short of its ambitious expectation of 44+ seats, but not short of becoming the game changer in these elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attracted the largest crowd ever seen in the Kishtwar town when he hit the BJP poll campaign in J&K on Saturday. More than 50,000 is perhaps something even the biggest supporters of BJP would have doubted. Modi said this was the largest public rally in Kishtwar in 20 years but stood corrected when he said that was the largest public meeting in Kishtwar after Independence. Modi is scheduled to address at least five more election rallies in Jammu and the Valley in the coming days. Many people believe his rally in Kishtwar has changed the electoral equations in the Chenab Valley. If his presence for a few hours can change the political equations in Chenab Valley it can be safely said he can do so at others places also. Again like the Lok Sabha elections, Modi is becoming a major factor in J&K elections. What needs to be seen is into how many seats does this Modi factor turn in terms of vote share for the BJP. The emergence of BJP and the no-holds-barred war of attrition between the regional parties including the NC and the PDP with the BJP would make it very interesting to see which of these parties finally aligns with the BJP if arithmetic so dictates after the elections. The BJP has also been targeting family rule in J&K. If it does not get the simple majority on its own, would the BJP align with any one of the two parties it blames for continuing family rule in a political match fixing in the State ? It is a likely situation in which many regional politicians would have to be ready to swallow the bitter the bill. What needs to be seen is how quickly does one regional player do to surprise its rival. |
