Extension lecture held at MIER | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 24: An extension lecture on the Topic "Education and Women Empowerment" was organized by SSGCWS for the students and staff members of all the wings of MIER. Dr Deepshikha Kotwal former Director Centre for Women Studies University of Jammu was the resource person for the programme. At the beginning of the programme Wall Magazine which is a regular feature of the Centre was inaugurated by Dr Deepshikha Kotwal on the Topic "Education as a tool for Empowerment". Dr. Renu Gupta formally welcomed Dr. Deepshikha Kotwal and said that she is an appropriate choice for discussion on the said topic as she has specialized in women studies and Victorian fiction and has published several articles and books on women issues in addition to holding various positions in the University of Jammu. Dr. Gupta said that education is one of the most important tools to empower women as it can have a ripple effect across family as well as generations. Empowerment is a process of helping women to grow and develop to their maximum potentialities making them self reliant and self directive. Dr Deepshikha elaborated broadly upon four major areas namely what is a woman, what is empowerment, what is education; what is feminism; what do women want today and has education provided it. She talked at length about the three seminal things- 'woman' which is no longer 'woe-man' but 'womyn' i.e. independent and autonomous. A lively interaction followed in which the participants very enthusiastically shared their view points. Monika Rathore coordinator SSGWS presented a formal vote of thanks.
