BANDIPORA, Nov 24 : Political analysts expect 60 to 70 percent polling in Bandipora constituency which goes to polls tomorrow. This time 1,597 Kashmiri Pandit voters will exercise their franchise through ballot papers in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, which will go for polls on Nov 25. Political analysts expressed hope that about 60 to 70 per cent electorate will exercise their democratic right this time against only 40 per cent recorded during LokSabha polls.The voting percentage of the district in LokSabha elections was low as the Bandipora Assembly constituency recorded only 20 per cent voter turnout due to boycott in almost 33 polling booths, analysts said. Early Times spoke to some senior government officials in Bandipora district who said that they have taken measures to build confidence among the people to come out and vote without any fear. On security measures taken by the government, an official said that, "we have taken into custody all the miscreants and youths who have a record of stone pelting and creating ruckus during elections. We have finalized all arrangements for free, fair and peaceful polling in Bandipora, Gurez and Sonawari constituencies, senior official said.Early Times have leant from officials that apart from state police, 73 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district to maintain law and order. The border constituency of Gurez, which has 17,554 voters, has 27 polling booths and Sonawari, where 99,449 people are eligible to cast their votes, has 112 polling booths meanwhile Bandipora, where 98,377 voters are registered, has 124 booths. In all the three constituencies of Bandipora, 129 polling booths have been marked as hyper-sensitive, 123 sensitive and only 19 booths are normal.It is also important to mention here that 1,597 Kashmiri Pandit voters will exercise their franchise through ballot papers in the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls in Bandipora district. According to senior official from Electoral Registration Office Bandipora, wished not to be named said that, "there are highest numbers of 1,597 Kashmiri Pandit (KP) voters, who are registered in two Assembly segments of Bandipora district. Giving further details, official said that there are 1,349 KP voters registered in Bandipora constituency followed by 248 in Sonawari in Bandipora district. However there are no Kashmiri Pandit voters registered in Gurez constituency of Bandipora district, official added. It is pertinent to mention here that in the last week Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed addressed election rallies Bandipora and Sonawari Assembly constituencies to support for his party candidates Nizam-ud-Din Bhat and Yasir Reshi. Meanwhile Bandipora district has also witnessed two big rallies in past. Congress President Sonia Gandhion Friday addressed an election rally in favor of party candidate Usman Majeed from Bandipora constituency. |
