JURSEA elections, an eye-opener! | Youth leadership just for slogan shouting, crowd gathering, pasting posters in J&K | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 24: If the results of the elections for Jammu University's highest student body JURSEA are any indication, student leadership is of no consequence for both regional as well as national political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from being good crowd gatherers and slogan shouters, the student leaders are seemingly of no importance for almost all the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir, who otherwise miss no opportunity in referring to role of youth in nation building and emphasizing the need for giving youth more opportunities in politics. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is one such exception which has given tickets to several new and young faces but even it has failed to strengthen it youth bodies in Jammu region and especially in Jammu University. Though universities across the country craft individuals to lead the nation in various spheres, J&K is an exception. Ask for the reason and people would tell you that youth in J&K means one who is born with a silver spoon and one who has to carry on the legacy of his forefathers in politics. While student politics continues to be sin in Kashmir University, it continues to be inconsequential in Jammu University if one investigates role of major regional and national parties in it. Neither any regional party nor any of the two national parties and not even left have ever succeeded in the elections for the Jammu University's highest student body JURSEA. Ask for the reasons and you would be told that all the political parties have student bodies in the University as well the colleges but redundant and of no need other than slogan shouting and crowd gathering apart from being important elements in fulfilling the hidden motives and agendas of these political parties. A little known National Secular Forum (NSF) made ABVP, the youth wing of BJP bite dust in the JURSEA elections by winning elections of five out of six positions in JURSEA. The forum took on ABVP and its communal election campaign aided and abetted by several faculty members of Jammu University (JU) including JUTA President Prof. Dalip Singh and General Secretary Dr. VarinderKoundal. Not only they defeated ABVP but ensured that it does not any of the five important positions in JURSEA.PDP does have a youth body and its leadership has been seriously promoting youth across the state but its university unit is yet to make any major mark. The party has fielded several youngsters as candidates from various constituencies but is yet to make a mark in Jammu University. National Conference (NC) has handed over mandate to Provincial Youth President Surinder Singh Bunty from Gandhinagar just to ensure that the contest remains between Congress leader Raman Bhalla and BJP's Kavinder Gupta. Bunty, who is no more a youth leader and infact, should have been included in parent body by now represents youth in NC. Most of the other youth leaders of NC have crossed the threshold of being called youth leaders and yet they constitute youth wing of NC. In Jammu University, NCSU is headless and the man they have chosen to head the body got just 4 votes. The union is known more for shouting slogans, pasting posters on the walls across Jammu region, organizing small functions where parachute dropped politicians come and deliver lectures apart from waving flags and indulging in activities planned by old hawks and rigid politicians. NC's youth wing is more of a small company run by a corporate tycoon with plus 44 as members.BJP, which has of late seen joining of several so-called big wigs, is also struggling to allow young people to dominate the scene. In JU, its youth wing is active but most of the work is done by ex-Professors who are more bothered about being elevated to the positions of their choice and less interested in creating serious politicians. ABVP is run by an Economics faculty member with the active support of a Physics faculty member and maintained by a Mathematics faculty member. Hence, the University unit is more a job seeking group and less a group concerned about welfare of students and scholars. Congress has highest presence in the campus but none of its leaders have ever bothered to take University campus seriously and ensure issues of scholars and students are redressed. Ask for the reason and you would be told that those who headed NSUI had only one ambition, to get a Congress and contest elections. Hence, Congress too failed to win over JU. |
