Says, JK's accession with India conditional; forgets separatists are behind bars for preaching secessionism | Fearing rout, Omar reaches Salahuddin's village | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 3: Shaken by the huge voter turnout in the first two phases of the ongoing Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today questioned JK's accession with India and claimed that the Himalayan state had conditionally acceded to India. Omar while addressing an election gathering at Soibugh, the native village of the Hizbul Mujahideen chief commander Syed Salahuddin, Omar Abdullah, in order to address the Jamaat vote bank, raised Kashmir issue. "Those entities that are desirous of a debate on Article 370 should read history and know that the State of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India based on basic, constitutionally validated conditions that were put in place by Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to guard the political distinctiveness of the State and to act as a protection of the political aspirations of our people," Omar said while addressing a gathering in Jamaat citadel. "Let me make it very clear to the BJP, Congress and the PDP - Article 370 is non-negotiable and the only debate one needs to have on Article 370 is about its restoration to its original, pristine form," he added. Omar raised the bogey of Kashmir issue a day after eight constituencies in Kashmir went to polls in the second phase. The reports emanating from the ground maintain that National Conference is all set to face the rout as people who made serpentine queues outside the polling stations in north and south Kashmir on Tuesday had only agenda to see NC out. It seems people voting against the National Conference have woken up Omar from deep slumber and now he is making last ditch efforts to woo the voters. His desperate attempts to get the polls deferred failed to move the centre and the record polling percentage in the first two phases of the ongoing Assembly elections has proved to be the last nail in NC's coffin. Soon after the Assembly elections were announced most NC leaders, including the Chief Minister, were of the opinion that people would boycott the polls and it would help the NC candidates. However, people have upset their calculations and are voting in droves. Omar's desperation can be gauged from the fact that he chose the bastion of Jamaat Islami to raise Kashmir issue by doing so he is trying to prove that he too is a "separatist" and there is little difference between National Conference and Hurriyat Conference. It seems Omar has sensed defeat and has realized that NC is set to witness a complete white wash that is why he is trying to play a parting shot which he believes could go in his favour. It looks like that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has forgotten that his Government has jailed the separatists in Kashmir on the charges of they challenging JK's accession with India. If he is against the accession he should tender his resignation and join the separatist camp and preach secessionism. Omar taking a U-turn in the native village of Syed Salahuddin is not going to help his party's cause as people this time have made up their mind to punish NC-Cong coalition and get rid of it as soon as possible. |
