islamabad, Jan 1: Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, one of the key plotters of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, was sent to 14-day judicial custody in kidnapping case and will be produced in an Islamabad court on January 15.
Lakhvi's judicial custody came after, the Pakistan government finally challenged the bail granted to 26/11 accused Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi on Thursday, in a move much-awaited by India.
Just a couple of days after the heinous Taliban massacre of Peshawar school kids, the Pakistan Anti Terrorism Court had granted bail to Lakhvi and six others accused of planning, financing and helping to execute the carnage in Mumbai in 2008.
Pakistani interior ministry today challenged the Islamabad High Court's order to suspend the Mumbai attack accused's detention in the Supreme Court, the PTI reported citing a government official. The government has reasoned that Lakhvi's release may cause law and order problem in the country. The official added that the Islamabad High Court's order to suspend Lakhvi's detention under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) has weak legal grounds.
Earlier, citing Lakhvi's bail as a technical error, the Pakistan government said it will challenge the bail in court. But before it could collect the bail order, the Islamabad High Court on Monday issued an interim order to cancel his detention notification, paving the way for his release out of jail.
The move had enraged India enough and New Delhi's Ministry of External Affairs summoned Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Basit.
India said that it expected Pakistan to abide by the commitment that expeditious steps would be taken to bring all those responsible for the heinous acts of terrorism in Mumbai to justice. Lakhvi was then on Tuesday, re-arrested and remanded to two-day physical custody of the Islamabad Police in connection with a six-year-old case of kidnapping.
Yesterday, the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case, challenged his detention order in a Pakistani court.
Lakhvi was arrested by Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and has since been serving jail in Rawalpindi.
While Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed masterminded the Mumbai terror attack, it was Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, who was the handler of all ten gunmen who came ashore Mumbai that fateful night and was also in touch with them throughout the massacre.
