Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 1: Clouds of trouble are looming large over Jammu farmers with the sowing season for wheat at its peak and rain seems in no mood to fall. There is no possibility of rains in coming days and if rains fail the farmers, more than 50 percent crop will be impacted, which will also increase the food deficit in the region. According to Metrology department, the average rainfall in the month of December for the last financial year 2013-14 was 32.98 millimeters but for the current financial year 2014-15, the rainfall recorded was zero mm for the month of December. The rain fall recorded in Jammu region in the month of December was Jammu district-13.8mm, Kathua- 64.2 mm, Banihal- 60.3 mm, Katra- 18.8 mm, Samba- 18.6mm and Udhmpur- 22.2mm. "The average rainfall in entire Jammu province was 32.98 but normal expected rainfall was 58.3 which was 25.32 mm less than normal in the previous financial year but in the current financial year no rainfall was witnessed in the month of December", the sources in metrological department said. Moreover, source in the Agriculture Production department informed Early Times that in Kandi area, only few farmers have so far sown the wheat crop besides remaining have been still waiting for rains. "If there will be no rains till January 13, the saplings of wheat crop already grown up will turn pale and will be destroyed while maximum of sowing in Kandi area is still due and in absence of rains there will be no sowing and farmers will be badly impacted", they said. They further said that during current financial year, floods had brought devastation in Jammu region and had destroyed thousands of hectares of paddy crops and if went by the mood of climate, the farmers would have to face another catastrophe. "Apart from Kandi areas, a big chunk of so called irrigated area is also depend on rains and if in absence of rains, the wheat crop in irrigated areas will also get impacted", they said. Devidass a farmer of Samba said that though they have sown the crop and saplings have developed but it needed rains and if there will be no rain in coming days, whole crop will be destroyed. "Even the nearby hilly areas and entire Kandi belt is waiting for rains and our hopes are on god now", he said. The Kandi area of Jammu region assisted more than 40 percent in total production of wheat in Jammu and the dependence of state would increase on import of food grains. "If state government wants to be self reliant in food grains production, in near future new irrigation channels for Kandi area will be developed", another farmer said. |
