10 day NSS winter camp concludes at GCW Gandhi Nagar

JAMMU, Jan 1 : The ten days winter camp organized by NSS unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Jammu concluded and distributed cloths and sweets among the inhabitants of Baili Charan.
During the 10 days camp from 22 to December 31 December 2014, a variety of programmes and activities were undertaken by NSS volunteers including visit to slam areas and orphan school, literacy survey, painting competition, cleanliness drive, raising an herbal garden and guest lecture on post disaster recovery.
On the concluding day the NSS volunteers led by NSS programme officer Dr. Ashaq Malik along with Prof. Navdeep Bhalwal and Prof. Shiv Singh visited slum area in Baili Charan. Volunteers took a brief review of literacy, health, sanitation, hygiene, socio-economic conditions and a damaged school in area and also interacted with the children about harms of drug addiction and the essence of education, sanitation and personal hygiene. On return to college, a painting competition on Sustainable development was also organized. Later, a valedictory function was organized and volunteers reflected their experiences during 10 days camp. Principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi appreciated the successful accomplishment of the camp and said that serving the weaker sections of society was the need and NSS volunteers could play pivotal role in empowering these communities by continued awareness campaigns. Prof. Sudanshu Shrama also lauded the efforts of NSS volunteers in community service and raising the garden in college campus. NSS volunteer Menakshi and Hadiqa conducted the proceeding of programme whereas Dr. Ashaq Malik presented vote of thanks. Prominent among others presented on the occasion were Prof. Ashwani Khajuria, Prof. Navdeep Bhalwal and Prof. Shiv Mangal besides NSS Programme Officers Dr. Shiveta Gandotra and Prof. Shrotika Rajput.
