BJP softens stand on Jammu CM demand | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 1: A day after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti hinted that her party is not averse to an alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), the BJP today softened its stand on having a Chief Minister from Jammu region, giving credence to the reports that both the parties may come together and end the stalemate over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP's state incharge Avinash Rai Khanna while talking to reporters after meeting the Governor N N Vohra in Jammu while replying to a query on the demand for a chief minister from Jammu region, said, "Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh constitute one state and the chief minister would be from the state of Jammu and Kashmir." The BJP leadership in Jammu and Kashmir had been till now batting strongly for a Chief Minister from Jammu, especially from the party, in case of a post-poll alliance. Sources told Early Times that both the parties BJP and PDP have agreed on many points over the formation of next coalition government in the state and central leadership of BJP has asked the state unit to sit with the PDP leaders and come up with a proposal which is acceptable to both the parties. "BJP by giving up its demand for Chief Minister from Jammu region wants to honour the PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who has vast experience in politics, and has emerged as one of the tallest leaders in Kashmir in the recent years," said a BJP insider. He said the newly elected BJP legislators have put the ball in the court of party high command and have authorized the BJP Chief Amit Shah to take final call over the issue. A BJP leader while talking to Early Times said that it's the duty of the PDP which got mandate in Kashmir by winning 28 seats and the BJP which got mandate in Jammu region by bagging 25 seats to respect the wishes of people. "BJP has got the highest vote share followed by the PDP," he said. "We have to ensure that we respect the mandate of both the regions and live upto the expectations of people who have voted for a change." The leader said that if both the parties agree on broader perspectives of the alliance negotiations can be held over Chief Minister's post and "I believe no one would oppose Mufti Sayeed’s name as the Chief Minister as he is a veteran politician and can lead from the front. It's my personal opinion," he added. Meanwhile, sources in Congress and National Conference revealed that PDP-BJP hinting at the broad base alliance between them has created ripples in both the camps and leaders of both the parties have developed "cold feet." The senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad finding no takers for his grand alliance idea has perturbed him. NC has made it clear that it wants to support the regional alliance and Congress is a national party. Even the JKPCC Chief Professor Saifuddin Soz had distanced himself from the grand alliance idea and has described it as Azad's "personal view." The NC leaders, according to the sources, have decided to see what happens in future and have made up their mind to sit in the opposition as PDP has not even uttered a single word about NC's unconditional support offer and has ignored it. |
