Incessant rains, govt apathy compounds problems for Mir Behri residents
4/29/2015 11:33:01 PM

Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Apr 29: There seems to be no respite for the residents of Mir Behri locality in the interior of Dal Lake since last year’s catastrophic floods as the area witnessed second flood in the month of April 2015.

The latest deluge is the third since the last year’s September flood. The life of the residents has become a nightmare while they are struggling to overcome the devastation of September floods as the area was worst hit in the floods.

“We are in a state of frustration since last year’s flood as our daily life has come to a standstill. We are workless as the whole season of the cultivation was wasted due to floods and all sources of livelihood have been completely destroyed. All schools in our area by and large remain closed as the road is cut off from the rest of the city at earliest of floods”, said Firdous Ahmad, Vice President of Mir Behri Welfare Society.

Firdous said that frequent closure of schools have left most of the students in a state of depression. He said the students are feeling frustrated and depressed after witnessing that their precious time is being wasted and they are deeply worried about their uncertain future.

“The area of Mir Behri Dal is the most backward area in the city and distressfully the catastrophic devastation of September 2014 floods have broken the backbone of the deprived souls in every aspect, being it livelihood, education, development and standard of life. In such a scenario such situation has arisen that it is imperative for government authorities to declare the area as backward officially and constitutionally”, said Sajad Hussain, a law graduate of the area.

The locals allege that situation could have been less bad if the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) authorities had kept the level of water to the normal of 7.5 ft height. They said in contrast to this, the LAWDA authorities kept the level of water 2 feet high from the normal after 2014 floods that led to the devastation of Mir Behri Dal which is reeling in the floods during March and April this year.

“We demand that the flood gates be opened at the earliest and after the situation comes to normal the level of water should be kept 1 feet below the normal as the Met Department has forecast frequent rains in the advancing months,” said the locals.
