| Rana, Bunty project themselves as ‘big leaders’ | | NC veterans fume, fear party may split | | Fazal Khan | 4/29/2015 11:34:53 PM |
| Srinagar, Apr 29: In a bid to strengthen his own lobby in National Conference, Devender Singh Rana, “Friday man” of the ousted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with the Surinder Singh Bunty, who contested 2014 assembly elections unsuccessfully, is preparing a list of “young leaders” from Jammu region evoking strong resentment within the party. Sources told Early Times NC’s dismal performance in 2014 assembly elections has sent most of the senior leaders into a tizzy and they are yet come out of the hibernation. “Rana has joined hands with a few NC workers and is trying his best to seize the opportunity to build his base in the party. He is framing the list of his own men and is trying to give them prime positions in the party,” sources added. They said Rana along with Surinder Singh Bunty, who just managed to get 228 votes in the last assembly elections, are projecting themselves as “big leaders” and are showing “big dreams” to “non-entities.” In a related development National Conference on Wednesday nominated three new district presidents in the Jammu Province. “With the approval of the Working President Omar Abdullah and General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, the Provincial President Devender Singh Rana nominated Dharamveer Singh Jamwal as District President, Jammu Urban; Shaffayat Khan, District President Rajouri Urban and Sajjad Shaheen District President Ramban,” a NC spokesman said in a statement. Sources said that Rana trying to “hijack NC’s agenda” has triggered strong resentment within the party. “Rana is no authority to appoint the office bearers. He is taking advantage of his close proximity with the NC working President Omar Abdullah,” they added. An insider said, senior leaders of the party are not happy with Rana’s attitude and believe that he is trying to project himself as the face of the National Conference. “Senior leaders are of the opinion that first NC should introspect why it was unable to open its account in parliamentary elections and then why it only bagged 15 seats in the assembly elections. This is not the time to appoint new office bearers,” the insider said. He said senior leaders have requested the National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah to take over the reins of the party. “NC lost many dedicated workers during the past 6-years and party losing grass root workers led to NC’s defeat,” the insider added. Sources said that senior NC leaders have taken a strong exception of the activities of Rana and Bunty and have decided to formally approach the NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah in this regard. “Our humble suggestion is that first priority should be given to disgruntled elements and all the efforts should be put to bring them back. Appointing new party bearers, preparing a list of new faces is not going to help anyone’s cause. If activities of a few people are not checked at this point of time there is every possibility of NC losing its base once for all in the state and getting split,” said a senior NC leader. ."
