| Intervention by Jitendra, Nirmal works; BJP legislators meet Jaitley | | Jammu likely to get AIIMS | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 29: The Centre is likely to consider demand of J&K unit of the BJP for sanctioning an AIIMS-like health institute for Jammu. New Delhi's decision to sanction one AIIMS for Kashmir Valley has angered people of the Jammu region who overwhelmingly voted for the BJP in the assembly elections. The anger was demonstrated by people through a complete bandh in Jammu last week to protest against ignoring genuine demand of the Jammuites for setting up an AIIMS here. Sensing the anger of people, the Minister of State in the PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh, had recently stated that the AIIMS was meant for Jammu actually, indicating that New Delhi was misled over the issue. Though Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh had ruled out the possibility of "snatching" the AIIMS from Kashmir to appease the Jammuites, he came under severe pressure from not only people but from the sangh parivaar too, prompting him to take up the issue with the Centre. Reports from New Delhi said that it was in this context that Dr Nirmal Singh had a brief session with Prime Minister Modi during which he requested the latter to reconsider the demand of the Jammuites an AIIMS. Dr Nirmal Singh explained to Modi that during the previous Congress-led UPA government, the Centre had ignored Jammu and had sanctioned one central university for the Valley. However, the state unit of the Congress had mounted pressure on the party high command which forced the previous central government to alter its stand and sanction one more Central University for the state and the campus was established in Jammu. Reports also said that both Dr Jitendra Singh and Nirmal Singh have conveyed to the BJP high command in general and PM Modi in particular that the BJP may face the wrath of people in Jammu if the AIIMS was not sanctioned for the region. The duo also urged the PM to sanction the AIIMS for Jammu without cancelling the one sanctioned for the Valley. Meanwhile, BJP legislators submitted a memorandum in support of their demand for AIIMS in Jammu A group of BJP legislators from Jammu met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and demanded AIIMS for Jammu. The group was headed by State President and MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, Union MoS in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh and MP (Rajya Sabha) Shamsher Singh Manhas. The delegation met the Union Minister and apprised him of the dire need of Jammuites for AIIMS in Jammu. The delegation also included Sat Sharma (CA), Sham Choudhary, Rajesh Gupta, Rajiv Sharma and Dr. Devinder Manyal. In addition to the meeting with Union Finance Minister, the delegation also submitted a memorandum to PM Modi. The memorandum states the demographical importance of the winter capital and besides people of Jammu, how some of the districts of neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are heavily dependent on Jammu for better medicare. "Added to it is the another fact of about 2-3 lakh migrant population/labour class from Bihar, UP, MP, Chhattisgarh and also Kashmir and Ladakh that is again added responsibility/load on Jammu for providing them medical facilities," it said. The memorandum also states that the overwhelming mandate given by the people of Jammu to BJP, their hopes to get justice from the BJP government at Centre increases manifold and as local elected representatives are bound to project their demands and ask for solutions to their problems/demands. It also states sharp imbalance in the intake capacity of postgraduates in Jammu Division as compared to Kashmir Division. |
