Several ATMs continue to run dry in Jammu; most banks remain cashless | Banks, ATMs witness heavy rush consecutively for third day | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 12: For the third consecutive day of the exchange of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denomination notes, Jammu city continue to witness chaotic scenes at several banks and ATMs as huge rush of people keep on thronging them, while on the other hand, quite a lot of ATMs either stay shut or without cash on Saturday thereby a large number of general public's hopes to get their money swapped again dashed. Long queues of people were once again visible at several ATM locations but despite hectic efforts and tries majority of people were unable to withdraw restricted amount of Rs 2000 since most of the ATMs went dry after few hours. Similar was the situation at majority of the bank branches where people had to wait for hours together to get both their old Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denomination notes exchanged or get their money deposited. While some were fortunate enough to get their money deposited or get it exchanged, most of the people had to go through disappointment as they could not able to accomplish the 'mission'. With huge number of customers rushing to banks, it was all commotion as most of the banks in city remained cashless which further piled worries of the people. There was chaos as people not only crowded the banks' premises but also parked their vehicles haphazardly, thus causing long traffic jams. "The claims and assurances of the Union Government that banks have sufficient cash to tackle the situations have fallen flat…I visited more than 15 ATMs of all banks but not a single machine was functional," Darshan Lal, who runs a grocery store told Early Times. Another problem which is being faced by the people is the refusal of those banks, who were directed by the Reserve Bank of India to accept old currency notes even if a person doesn't have a bank account in that particular branch. "People were not allowed by several banks to exchange old currency with the new one citing cash paucity. This happened with several others and me at ICICI Bank, Janipur Branch," said a house wife, Ruchi Sharma. "When I reached ICICI Bank, the security guard standing outside the branch asked me whether I have come to deposit money to which I replied in negative…I then told him that I've come for the exchange of old currency notes. After listening me he said sorry madam only deposit is allowed as bank is cashless," she added. Similar was the situation in other parts of Jammu province including Ramban where chaos prevailed as most of the banks in the district remained jam-packed. The labourers working in different construction sites in localities were very upset due to unavailability of their wages from the owners of construction sites due to lack of cash. One Mohd Sain working as a labourer in Ramban market said that he has no amount for purchasing essential commodities for his family. |
