ASHA sammelan for awareness on PC& PNDT ACT under BBBP held at Kathua

Kathua, Nov 12: To create the awareness about female feoticide and its ill effect on society at large, District Health Society Kathua under chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kathua Ramesh Kumar today organized a workshop on PC-PNDT Act with special focus on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) here at DC office complex.
During the sammelan District and Block Coordinators besides ASHA Facilitator and ASHA workers were acquaint with the provisions of PC-PNDT Act.
While addressing the workshop, DC Ramesh Kumar said that decreasing female child sex ratio was major concern for any society which leaves women the most vulnerable group. The sex ratio of a given population is also used as a strong indicator to ascertain social health, DC added.
The adverse sex ratios (where female are lesser than male) not only indicate poor social health, but also a barrier in attaining sustainable social development.
DC said unfortunately Kathua district is among the district recorded with lowest female Child Sex Ratio. He also discussed the myths and misconceptions attached with the issues of gender and sex selection and how ASHA worker can contribute effectively to address these issues.
ASHAs can help to improve CSR by dissemination of information to the family members of pregnant female on social and legal issues of sex selection.
The DC said the motive behind the workshop was to capacitate ground staff of the health department to raise public awareness on gender equity.
He laid stress for registration of pregnant ladies and track record of every registered woman so that practice of selective abortion or female foeticide can be discouraged and institutional deliveries be encouraged.
He said female foeticide is a criminal offence and attracts penal provision of PC-PNDT Act. He said district administration has already announced reward for any whistleblower who will inform authorities about any incident of selective abortion/ female foeticide.
On the occasion Dy CMO Chitra Vaishnavi gave presentation on PC & PNDT Act and best practices by ASHA workers in saving girl child.
District Information officer kathua Angrej Singh, Gynecologist Dr Romy Sharma, and Legal expert Adv. Sushil Gupta were present on the occasion.
