Leh freezes at -6.8 deg; sub-zero temp in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 12: Leh in Ladakh region froze at minus 6.8 degrees Celsius while chilly weather continued in the Kashmir Valley where the minimum temperature was sub zero. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry though sky would be cloudy in Jammu and Kashmir during next 48 hours. He said the Leh froze after the minimum temperature witnessed further drop and settled at minus 6.8 degrees. A number of water bodies frozen. Below freezing temperature was also recorded at Kargil and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia in Ladakh region. The spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperature would be partly cloudy sky. Maximum and Minimum would be hovering around 13 degrees and minus 6 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours. Srinagar, the summer capital of Srinagar, recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 1 degrees two notches blow normal. People woke up to a chilly morning due to icy cold winds in the city, where life remained crippled due to strike though lone queues could be seen outside the ATMs and banks to exchange their old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes which were banned by the government. He said there could be isolated rain today in the valley. The sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 16 degree and minus one degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city, where frequent and unscheduled power cuts have become a routine now. |
