JAMMU, Nov 12: Taking the undue advantage of deteriorating situation in Kashmir due to ongoing terrorism, the anti social elements and land mafia have encroached thousands Kanals of land belonging to various power projects in the State.
According to sources hundreds kanals of land belonging to Upper Sindh Hydro Electric Power project which belonged to it.
According to sources the land for the project has been acquired from the locals and forest Department by the Government four decades back to construct power project in Kangan tehsil of Ganderbal district.
The project has two canals one is from Sumbal side while the another is from Wangat side of Kangan. The two canals which are of 10 kms length each join near Panzin Kangan wherefrom the water flows through Penstock to Kangan Power House.
The PDD had acquired thousands kanals of land for construction of Project but after its commissioning over a decade ago the hundreds kanals of land on the project from both Wangath and Sumbal side have been encroached by land mafia after taking undue advantage of turmoil in Valley.
Sources said that the Power Development Corporation (PDC) which is managing the project at present has not initiated any action against the land mafia who rule the roost.
The employees are also perturbed about it and they have also made a hue and cry against the same but the authorities at the helm of affairs maintain a stoic silence against the same.
The trade union leaders have demanded restoration of land to project and punitive action against the Mafia. The further demanded that the structures constructed on project land be demolished and the entire land be demarcated and fenced so that the Government property is not encroached in future.
