IT Deptt takes tax recovery action against builder, issues arrest warrant

Jammu, Feb 22: Income Tax Department Jammu today issued an arrest warrant against a builder, who is the son of a senior National Conference leader for not clearing his outstanding tax of Rs 68 lakhs. Sources in the department told Early Times that a team of Tax Recovery Officers of the Income Tax department along with police today reached at the residence of Rajan Dutta owner of Dutta Builders to arrest him for not paying outstanding dues.
Earlier, Rajan Dutta was served several notices in this connection by the Income Tax Department but every time he didn't respond to the notices. The department took stringent action today and sent a team with arrest warrant but the defaulter evaded his arrest as he was not present at his residence when recovery team reached there.
Later, the advocate of Rajan Dutta, presented himself on behalf of the defaulter before Income Tax officials and deposited Rs 10 lakh as a part of his outstanding tax and promised that balance amount will be cleared in March, 2018.
Talking to Early Times, Principal Commissioner Income Tax, J&K RN Sahay said that this was a part tax recovery measures and these kind of drives are being carried out all over India. "Rajan Dutta was a habitual defaulter, he was sent many notices but he didn't respond to them. There was an outstanding of Rs 68 lakhs and today a team was sent with arrest warrant but he was not present at home when team went to his residence but later he deposited Rs 10 lakh through his advocate and assured that balance amount will be cleared in March," he said further adding that there are several types of recovery measures against defaulters including issuance of arrest warrant, attaching their property, seizing of bank accounts etc. More such measures will be taken in days to come, he added.
