Dictated to sit in empty schools for 13 days, teachers accuse Govt of belittling them

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 22: The teachers working in Kashmir Valley have expressed concern over the recent government order in which they have been asked to report to schools 13 days ahead of the commencement of the routine class work after the winter break. The government on Wednesday asked the teachers in both government, as well as in the private educational institutes of Kashmir Valley to report to their respective places of posting on Friday- February 23.
Ironically, the government in the same breath stated that the routine class work in high schools and primary to middle schools will re-start on March 1 and March 5 respectively. The government in its recent order asked the teachers to clean schools, make heating arrangements and keep things ready ahead of the class work.
On social media as well, the government's recent diktat on teachers was the central theme of the discussions. The people were puzzled over the decision to ask teachers to go to empty school buildings and stay there without any student for half a month. "The government officers at the helm should have atleast thought once before taking any such decision. The government thinks that teachers are the clerks. We are not and the government must know it," said another Srinagar based teacher.
There were also discussions going on over how the Teachers' Unions were silent over the government diktat with accusing them of siding with the government for vested interests. "The teachers' forum should have come forward to register the protest. It is simply unnatural that the teachers have been asked to report to duties without students for 15 long days probably. This is unfair and unjustifiable," said another teacher, adding teachers union should have raised the issue with the concerned. Meanwhile, Teachers' Forum president, Qayoom Wani has issued statement in which he asked the government to review its decision.
