Shirking Tourism in J&K: Committee on Estimate lambasts Tourism Department

Jammu, Feb 22: House Committee on Estimate lambasted the tourism department for being unable to explore existing tourist destination in the state.
The 13 member committee headed by MLA Mohammad Ashraf Mir including two members from upper house, during a meeting attended by the Representative Tourism Department expressed dissatisfaction over department works to serve its purposes.
In its 47th report, the Committee on Estimates expressed its deep concern over the wrong message going to the outside State with regard to the prevailing/disturbed circumstances in the state and "The representatives of the Tourism Department should be engaged at the important spots viz. Airport, TRC and Bus stands who would guide the Foreign/Local Tourists about the entire Tourism places in the Kashmir Valley", the committee recommended.
The committee expressed its serious concern over the hike in Airfare during peak season of the Tourism in the valley that deters the tourist to arrange their visit.
"The matter be taken up with the Civil Aviation Department, Government of India for increasing the tourist flow in the valley", the committee suggested and further added for exploring the various tourist destinations in the State so that they could be brought on the Tourist Map.
It also expressed its deep concern over the stoppage of developmental works in Shiv Khori due to the statusquo by the Court and suggested that matter should be looked in to. It recommended that Master Plans for the newly identified/established Tourist Resorts viz. Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Patnitop, Sonamarg, Doodpathri and Yousmarg should be taken up with the Housing and Urban Development Department for its finalization. Besides it discussed the issue of providing basic tourist facilities at various tourist destinations viz. Doda, Mansar, Surinsar, Mantalie and Doodpathri together with initiating the steps for establishing an international Yoga Center at Mantali.
It was deliberated on the issue of lack of infrastructure at the tourist resort, Aharabal Shopian and recommended that immediate measures should be initiated to provide infrastructure for the comfort of the tourists and also to provide the shelter for the employees of the Tourism Department who are looking after the maintenance of the Tourist Resorts. It directed the department to arrange and enhance the Budgetary Provision for providing/rectifying the infrastructure at the Tourist.
