Srinagar, Feb 22: Government has failed to introduce police control room (PCR) vans in Kashmir to help strengthen the security system in valley.
An official said that there was a proposal to start PCR vans fitted with GPS system and CCTV cameras for strengthen the security mechanism in the valley.
The official said the PCR vans would have regularly patrol the roads in Kashmir, especially in Srinagar and was be connected with the PCR Srinagar.
"These vans are to be fitted with the GPS system, CCTV cameras' and mobile phones for effective policing and surveillance," the official said.
"When the PCR will get any information about any incident, the people in PCR van will automatically get to know and will reach there within minutes. But they have not been introduced yet," he said.
The official said that government had decided several times to start PCR vans. "We have brought some vans but because of technical difficulties they could not be started so far. Now very soon these vans will be on the streets connected with the PCR Srinagar," the official said.
In the first phase, the official said around 70 vans were to be introduced especially in Srinagar for policing.
He said these vans will also help to reduce the crime level and fatalities in road accidents.
Around 6,000 road accidents have been reported annually for the last two years in the state in which more than 1800 lost their lives. In 2015, 917 people lost their lives in 5,800 road accidents.
In 2016, 910 lives were claimed and over 8,000 suffered injuries by road accidents in the state.
Although, official sources said the main purpose of these vans is to reduce the crime rate but the presence of PCR vans at different locations will also act as a "psychological deterrence" for criminals.
They said the CCTV cameras will keep vigil on activities of miscreants and suspicious movement in the area. "The cameras will help us to keep a close watch on crimes on the streets and also help during law and order problem situation."
The PCR vans have been introduced in New Delhi and few other Indian states for effective policing.
But in Kashmir, sources said they will also help to monitor the situation during law and order problem and keep vigil on the suspicious movement.
