Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 15: PDP workers, who have been appointed as SPOs by the previous PDP-BJP government are likely to face action because the Government today ordered constitution of District-Level Official Committees for screening of SPOs engaged during the past 6 years.
There was much hue and cry when previous PDP-BJP government had appointed 8000 SPOs in Kashmir against just 2000 in Jammu despite the fact in Jammu there was need of more SPOs.
Today government issued an order and according to the order issued by the Home Department, each Committee will be headed by the concerned Deputy Commissioner with concerned district SSP and Dy Superintendent of Police (CID-SB) as members.
"These Committees shall assess and screen the SPOs engaged during the past 6 years, with regard to their selection, antecedents and performance," the order said adding that the Committees shall submit their report to the Home Department and the Director General Police within one month.
Due to lust of power, BJP had shamelessly maintained a silence on discrimination with Jammu but opposition NC and Congress had raised this issue in Assembly session and alleged that SPOs were appointed due to political consideration.
As reported earlier, government had sanctioned 8000 post of Special Police Officers (SPOs) for Kashmir region while Jammu has got only 2000 posts.
The sanction for the engagement of 10,000 SPOs in Jammu and Kashmir Police was accorded by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Out of the total number, Jammu district was given mere 200 SPOs in 2016 while Srinagar got the highest number in the state. Srinagar got 800 SPOs in one go with the district toping the entire state in terms of the allotment of such posts.
Documents reveal that the entire Jammu division that include the districts of Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtiwar, Ramban and Reasi 1100 SPOs were engaged. While as for Kashmir, till date, the sanction has been accorded to no less than 4400 SPO posts that include 800 from Srinagar.
While central Kashmir's Budgam district got 500 SPOs, Ganderbal was given in Jammu division only 1100 youth have been engaged as new SPOs in 10 districts. While 200 posts were given to Jammu district, the other nine districts that include Samba, Reasi, Poonch, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Doda, Kathua, Udhampur and Rajouri have been given 100 posts each.
200 such posts. Leh and Kargil got 100 new SPO posts each. For north Kashmir's Baramulla, the sanction was accorded to engage 400 SPOs, while as for Sopore, the number at present is 300. Bandipora and Kupwara have got 300 each while as 200 new SPOs have been sanctioned for Handwara. In south Kashmir's Anantnag district 600 SPOs were appointed, while as Pulwama and Awantipora got 200 each. In Shopian and Kulgam 400 youth have been engaged as SPOs.
As far as Jammu division is concerned, only 1100 youth were engaged as new SPOs in 10 districts. While 200 posts were given to Jammu district, the other nine districts that include Samba, Reasi, Poonch, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Doda, Kutua, Udhampur and Rajori were given 100 posts each.
