Docs, staff go on strike after alleged assault by attendants

JAMMU, July 23: The health services at Chest and Diseases Hospital were paralyzed on Monday as doctors, Nurses and other staff went on strike after alleged assault on a doctor, nurse by attendants of a patient, who also vandalized hospital property after the death of their relative on Sunday afternoon.
Hospital management claimed that FIR has been registered against the attackers.
Sources disclosed that an elderly patient with the history of Tuberculosis, was being treated in the hospital but he died after his condition deteriorated. On learning of his death, some irate relatives thrashed the staff on duty and vandalized the hospital property.
In solidarity with their colleagues, on Monday, the staff and doctors of the hospital staged a protest demonstration in the premises as well as outside the hospital and demanded strict action against the attackers and sought security for the hospital.
A meeting between staff, doctors, Principal and Medical Superintendents of the GMC and its associated hospitals took place in which assurances were given to the agitating staff that security issue will be taken up the concerned higher authority and in the meantime, six security guards will be provided on the shift basis.
Doctor, Mohammad Zaeem Khan, Registrar, CD Hospital, who was allegedly assaulted by family members of the deceased, told that the patient had the history of TB and he was put on Oxygen as his lungs were not in good condition. "On Sunday, the patient was shifted from ward no 4 to emergency ward no 1 as his condition was deteriorating. We followed a set protocol of CPR to resuscitate the patients but the patient didn't revive. The patient was declared dead and attendants with deceased were not aggressive, but after 10 to 12 minutes, others attendants entered in the nurses' room and started vandalizing the hospital property. They hit me, as well as a nurse on duty. Later, Police was called through Medical Superintendent of the Hospital to register an FIR in this regard and arrest the attackers" he narrated.
Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina said that the strike was called off as an FIR has been registered against the attackers and as far as security is concerned, the temporary arrangement has been done. "We will write to the government for creating a separate head for the security of CD hospital, "she added.
SHO, Bakshi Nagar Naresh Kumar said an FIR has been lodged by the hospital administration and investigation is on. "We have not arrested accused so far as they are performing the last rite of the relative, "he added.
Meanwhile, Jammu Doctors Forum expressed anguish over the assault on the staff in CD hospital.
"Our team had visited CD hospital and made an assessment of the patients' miseries. Some were waiting in OPDs for the check up and others were looking for medication in the wards, "JDF claimed, adding that they made the fervent request to the authorities to act upon these problems faced by the medicos and the general public.
