Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: More money is being pumped into strife torn Jammu and Kashmir by the Union Home Ministry to combat militancy and foil attempts of any violence in the state.
Since the onset of militancy in Kashmir, the Government of India (GOI) has released more than seven thousand crore rupees to the Jammu and Kashmir government to fight insurgency.
Earlier, the document released by the Union Home Ministry, revealed that apart from the expenditure incurred upon the deployment of the army and para-military troops in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir government has received a whopping 7207 crore rupees since the inception of militancy in the state.
The document released by the union home ministry reads that in view of the serious militancy/insurgency in Kashmir, the government of J&K has to incur more expenditure to maintain 'peace and tranquility'. It has led to the additional burden on its budget. "In order to mitigate this problem and with a view to augment the resources of J&K to fight terrorism and contain militancy besides maintaining law and order in the state, a separate, SRE scheme for Jammu and Kashmir was introduced," the document reads.
The document informs that since the inception of the militancy, the GOI has released rupees 4735.51 crores for police while rupees 2472.45 have been given for the rehabilitation of the pandits.
Reports inform that the funds being drifted from the centre to the state of Jammu and Kashmir would be enhanced due to the abrupt increase in the violence related incidents in the state. After several years of relative peace, from the year 2013, there has been an increase in terror-related incidents in the Valley, with majority of them occurring in South Kashmir and marked by participation of local youth.
A top home official in the state said that the upward trend being witnessed in militancy shall require more logistic support from the centre and that the hi-tech machinery to thwart the militant activities is needed. He added the JK government has already apprised the union home ministry about the assistance needed by the state police for maintaining tranquility.
