Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 29: In sheer violation of the rules and regulations of the State Health Department, hundreds of private clinical labs, diagnostic centres and nursing homes are operating illegally in the Jammu province for last many years.
An official within the department, seeking anonymity, told Early Times that not only this, some of the centres were running illegally but some of them indulged in sex-determination activity especially in Samba district despite clear directions of the concerned department as well as the Supreme Court. Sex determination activity was being done by a number of such centres for the last many years as they have nexus with officials of the concerned department, he said.
"Over 70 such health establishments are unregistered and functioning without required formalities. Moreover, a number of establishments do not have the facility of proper disposal of Bio-Medical Waste, which is compulsory for running such health centres. Despite that, the Health Department, as well as the State Pollution Control Board, didn't take any action in this regards.
Besides, a number of ultrasound clinics especially in hilly areas are also being run by the Government and private doctors, do not have complete formalities and fleecing patients as per their wish for last many years but they have managed to run the machines without approval under the nose of the concerned authority, official sources alleged.
Sources further alleged that no action was taken because they had a strong nexus with politicians and bureaucrat, who were saving them form legal action despite complaints against them. It seems the norms have been meant for a violation and no one has dared to take action against them.
Director Health Services could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
