J&K Civil Society honours prominent personalities for their contribution in Society

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 29: The J&K Civil Society Jammu has said that government alone cannot achieve the aim of social responsibility. Along with the government, support from civil society is equally important. There are a lot of areas where the government cannot reach but civil societies are doing ground work.
Continuing good work of encouraging and promoting all those who have done exceptionally well for Society, J&K Civil Society today under its convenor, Dr Yudhvir Gupta, Former Prof & Head Department of Pathology, GMC Jammu, honoured JMC Mayor Chander Mohan Gupta, Prof. Ashok Aima V.C Central University, Dr Shahid Moghal, President Bhaderwah Municipal Committee, Dr Dara Singh, Former HOD Department of Orthopaedics, GMC Jammu, Asgar Ali Former M.L.C, Abdul Majid Bhat, Secy to Govt Tribal Affairs, Neeraj Puri, Corporator Ward 54 Trikuta Nagar, S M Gandotra (Retd. Comptroller, Agriculture University of Kashmir), Afroz Mir (Special Secy. Law Deptt.), Anchor Kusum Tikoo and singer Sunil Sharma.
Dr. Gupta said that government takes care of the basics, such as defence, education and health care but it doesn't provide citizens with a way to organize themselves to do what is important to them or express their views. That's where civil society comes into play. It is the groups that people form to advocate for the things they believe in and to solve problems in their communities. Societies that do not allow people to connect with one another to solve problems or monitor their governments are less effective, less democratic and less resilient than those that do, he added. The goal of our work is reigniting that confidence and reactivating people's capacity to solve their own problems. One key is finding change agents - organizations or individuals who can help rebuild people's confidence. We try to identify change agents, train them and help them organize to improve whatever their communities need, he added.
Wattal in his address said that it's not enough to simply create or strengthen civil society organizations. We must make sure they have an environment in which they can thrive. Any program that seeks to strengthen civil society on a national scale has to address legal and regulatory issues and create a culture that is willing to support its own civil society organizations.
Other prominent members of J&K Civil Society in their address said that at various points throughout history, civil society has taken on the role of leading great movements of change, including civil rights, gender equality and other parity movements. Civil society is at its best when people at all levels of society adopt an idea.
