Srinagar, Dec 29: Under a public outreach campaign titled Jazba e Khair a round-table was held at Srinagar wherein participants discussed issues pertaining to governance, environment and culture.
Participants during the debate highlighted issues of corruption eating into the vitals of society. During the programme large number of both youth as well as senior citizens participated in the meeting. The participants expressed their concern over the destruction of environment and forests in state under the garb of development. The participants belonged to various civil society groups , NGOs and cultural organisations.
Deepak Mathur , Uzair Khan and Ajaz Sofi from Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Syed Nasarullah from Environmental Policy Group , Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat from RTI Movement, Mohammad Ramzan Khan from Rahat Foundation , Shahnawaz Sultan from Khyber Public School, Athar Parvez Journalist, Suhail Mehtar youth leader and Shahzada Saleem Cultural activist deliberated during the roundtable.
Participants expressed concern over the destruction of forests and apple orchards due to laying of Samba Amargrah transmission line. The transmission line passes through 9 districts of state including Budgam , Shopian ,Poonch and Rajouri.
"Transmission company was supposed to pay compensation to Govt for felling forest trees but such vague estimates were prepared by Forest department in lieue of huge kickbacks which not only caused environmental disaster but also caused a heavy loss to state treasury.
J&K Forest department has failed to recover legitimate compensation from M/S Sterlite Grid a private company that is executing the project. Sources say that in most of the forest areas local Forestors , Range Officers and even Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) have not made the actual assessment of damages caused to Forests. The officers have even failed to recover the compensation in many Forest blocks " said Mushtaq Ahmad RTI Activist from Chadoora
Deepak Mathur assured the audience that his organization would continue to support initiatives like holding dialogues that effect people. He said Jazba e Khair was the best platform to create awareness among people in Jammu & Kashmir. He urged upon the participants to hold such roundtables in Jammu and Ladakh as well.
