Ward No 7 residents protest over BJP's alleged interference in temple's affairs
4/1/2019 9:51:26 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 1: Alleging mischievous interference in the affairs of an ancient temple by few senior Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders, a large number of local residents of Ward No 7, (Prem Nagar) in old Jammu city under the leadership of their Councillor held a strong protest demonstration here today.
Led by Ritu Choudhary, Congress Councillor of Ward No 7, the protesting inhabitants of the area alleged that State General Secretary of the BJP Yudhvir Sethi as well as his wife Priya Sethi, senior BJP leader and former minister are unduly meddling with the day to day affairs of an ancient Lord Shiva temple in their locality and backing those who want to grab the property of the shrine.
Shouting slogans against the BJP leaders, the protesters said that they will not tolerate any kind of wrongdoing and flexing of muscle power by the top leadership of the saffron party.
Protesters said that the husband-wife leadership of the BJP is trying to impose a Mahant to look after the temple's religious affairs without the consent or consultation of the local residents adding that they have ulterior designs behind such a move.
"Yudhvir Sethi and Priya Sethi are patronizing few anti-social elements, who are hell bent upon grabbing the temple's land. The people who are in close proximity with the BJP leaders have an eye on the property of the temple. The temple remained locked for several years due to a dispute over construction of a commercial complex nearby by the same blue eyed people of the BJP leaders," said Councillor Ritu Coudhary.
"Before the elections to the Urban Local Bodies, the people of my ward had demanded to take up the issue of opening the temple with the authorities which I did after getting elected as Councillor and managed to get it reopened but now when the temple is functioning smoothly, the BJP leaders are trying to interfere in its affairs," Choudhary added.
Congress leader further alleged that the other day, BJP leaders Yudhvir Sethi, Priya Sethi along with ex-MLA Jammu (East) Rajesh Gupta organized a programme in the name of a Bhandara (Community Kitchen) and distributed blankets among the people which is a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct while they also brought a person to be installed as Mahant of the temple, however, neither the local residents nor she was invited or given prior information of the event.
"BJP leaders made a vain attempt to install a person as Mahant of the temple but the people of the area are up against such unwanted political interference in their revered place of worship. Locals are opposing the step of BJP leaders as they know the real purpose behind such a move. The authorities concerned should probe the distribution of blankets by the senior BJP leaders as well as their unwarranted interest in the temple's property," said Choudhary.
