R&B under scanner for poor blacktop of national highway

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 1: The Roads and Building Department (R&B) in Kashmir has come under scanner for allegedly poor quality blacktop of the national highway in Srinagar while the government may order an inquiry.
Official sources said the R&B didn't go for proper quality control of the blacktopping of the highway along Bemina on which around Rs two crore were spent in "odd season".
Sources said the engineers gave a go ahead for the blacktopping when the weather was not conducive.
"The blacktop was done after October 2018 when the temperatures had reduced and the quality control was not done properly. This hints at the simple formula that the concerned may have minted good fortunes in the deal," said a source in the R&B on the condition of anonymity.
He said the road got damaged within two months of the macadamisation and that it was the first such incident where even the quality of work on the national highway was not adhered to properly.
Sources said the matter came to the notice of the top brass when recently senior officials from from a central agency complained of bad road conditions of the stretch between Athwajan and Bemina.
Sources said the R&B engineers had declined to accept the claims saying that the road was macadamized only before last winter.
"But during inspection it was found that the road is badly damaged," the source said.
It was reliably learnt that the matter has come to the notice of the Raj Bhawan.
Sources said given the importance of the national highway the Raj Bhawan is likely to order an inquiry into the matter.
"Strict action is expected against those who would be found guilty of negligence," said a source.
But the R&B Kashmir downplayed the matter. "Wear and tear of roads is not that big an issue and we'll contact the concerned contractor," said one official.
