Unlike Kashmiri apple, no special scheme for RS Pura Basmati
Farmers seek LG’s intervention

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 3: Even as the RS Pura area is world famous for its Basmati rice, the government looks unconcerned towards the plight of farmers, who have suffered severe losses due to damage to the crop in the wake of bad weather coupled with Pakistani hostilities in this border region in Jammu province.
Even though the matter was recently picked up in the winter session of the Parliament, the Jammu and Kashmir government is yet to decide on the issue.
The area farmers said braving the hostilities like shelling and unprovoked firing from the enemy country, they had managed to cultivate the famed crop of Basmati rice but that the same got damaged due to heavy and unprecedented rains.
The farmers said they have suffered so huge losses that have made them debt ridden. “We are dying for want for relief from government as otherwise we’ll be left with no options but to take extreme steps,” the farmers said.
The BJP’s Parliamentarian, Jugal Kishore recently raised the issue in the Parliament that the farmers had suffered huge losses. His ruling party in the center, however, is yet to provide any succor to the farmers of RS Pura.
The gover
Discrimination unending!
ment’s alleged callousness towards this area in Jammu province is in stark contrast to how Kashmir is treated on such issues.
Just a few months ago, the government launched a special Market Intervention Scheme for the apple growers of Kashmir. Not only this, after the recent untimely snowfall in Kashmir that left some apple and other orchards damaged, the government has gone for a survey to compensate the losses of the fruit growers in Kashmir.
But unlike Kashmir that “largely supports the anti-national sentiment, Jammu region which has been traditionally nationalist suffers unheard for around seven decades.”
After the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, while the Kashmir region went for indefinite protests including hartal, Jammu wholeheartedly welcomed the decision of the Modi government.
In the last four odd months, however, Kashmir has been getting special funds including those for civic bodies while Jammu “as usual waits for its due share.”
When contacted a senior official said the matter would be looked into.
Meanwhile the Jammu people have appealed Lieutenant GC Murmu to personally look into the matter.
