Early Times Report

Kulgam, May 21: At least 21 policemen, posted in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
A senior police official said the 21 policemen posted at a reserve camp in higher secondary school Chawalgam, Kulgam for the last three months tested positive for coronavirus.
He said one policeman among the reserve company was tested positive a few days back after which samples of all cops posted there were taken.
“The 21 cops who have been declared covid positive are in isolation from 18th of March in a compound separated from District Police lines Kulgam by 3 Kilometers,” he said.
He said that all the policemen, who tested positive, were all part of a special pool of 60 personnel created as a reserve excusively for covid-19 duties at Quarantine and Isolation centers , for handling patients and potential carriers and for acting as substitutes for police stations in case of covid breakout in a particular unit.
Police said that samples of the policemen were taken for testing after a policeman among them tested positive before few days. “When one among them tested positive we requested health authorities to take samples of all other policemen for testing,” he added.
He said that all steps have been taken to contain the spread of novel coronavirus in the district.
It is important to recall here that few days ago 78 turned positive for coronavirus in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district during last week.
Officials are perturbed as many of those who tested positive were posted at the mess and clothing stores or manned the gates. With today’s addition from Kulgam, around 100 cops of Jammu and Kashmir Police are now active positive cases in troubled South Kashmir.
Meanwhile, 59 including 21 cops tested positive in Jammu and Kashmir thus taking the total number of positive cases 1449.
So far 684 cases have recovered while the erstwhile state has witnessed 20 deaths till Thursday evening.
