EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, May 21: Despite the advisory of the Central government that the labourers stay where they were and the local administrations must take steps to ensure their well-being in situ, several migrant labourers are still leaving for their home towns by employing different ways and means particularly taking up the journeys on foot.
The mass movement of migrant of labourers on foot is not only threatening their lives but it’s also increasing the chances of spread of Corona infections while the concerned authorities are paying no heed towards this.
In one such bizarre episode many migratory labourers were today spotted at Jagti, Nagrota area who were moving towards their native states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on foot.
These labourers, who are working at IIT Jammu at Jagti after being engaged by a contractor, when asked about the reasons to move on foot, responded that none has approached them to take care of their needs and they have exhausted all their money as well as ration.
In a video shot by the team of Early Times, senior Congress leader Ashwani Khajuria and his wife Priti Khajuria, a councilor of Municipal Council (MC) Udhampur, could be seen asking these labourers to approach the DC Jammu but in response the labourers said that they will only return to their homes and have no interest to visit anyone.
However, the couple informed the concerned police about the movement of labourers.
“When such is the condition of the labourers who were working for a government organization through contractor then what will be happening to all the other labourers. What the govt is doing? Only lies and promises to these poor labourers,” said Priti Khajuria while speaking to Early Times.
“The concerned authorities should take extra care in this regard and properly locate such labourers to help them,” she further said, claiming that there are more instances of such movements of labourers and the administration is doing only paper work.
