Srinagar, Mar 14: Now when Lal Singh is enjoying power luxuries while being in BJP, years earlier, same party used to accuse Singh of grabbing hundreds of kanal of land, asking government to take action against him.
On April 1, 2011 BJP created uproar in the house against Lal Singh accusing him of encroaching upon 324 kanal of land. The BJP MLAs on that day displayed, what they termed an official document saying the names of Lal Singh and Gulchain Singh Charak figured in it as land encroachers.
"When the Government is taking action against bureaucrats and Government employees, why it's not acting against politicians? The Government should take action against the politicians, who have encroached the land", Sapolia the BJP MLA had said at that point of time on the floor of the house.
All BJP members including Prof Chaman Lal Gupta were on their feet and demanded action against the Congress leaders for encroaching land.
BJP MLA Durga Dass called for setting up of a Commission to probe the cases of land grabbing.
Later, Sapolia handed over the official document carrying names of Lal Singh and Gulchain Singh to Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone.
The records available with Early Times reveal that on October 17, 2012 State Accountability Commission (SAC) received a fresh complaint against four state politicians including two sitting ministers and a senior bureaucrat for being "involved in graft case."
The complainant Saquib Mushtaq of Qamarwari had named former R&B Minister, GM Saroori, Urban and Local Bodies Minister, Tara Chand, PHE Minister, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Member Parliament, Lal Singh and a former Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC), Dileep Thusoo for being involved in land grab and embezzlement of public exchequer.
The accusations leveled against Saroori were that as former R&B Minister he misused his official position to allot almost 2000 works without tenders, causing huge loss to the state exchequer.
Saroori lost his R&B portfolio after the surfacing of an impersonation case involving his daughter.
The complaint against Tara Chand mentioned that large-scale fake and illegal appointments and promotions took place in the Local Bodies Department under his charge.
The complainant had also accused then MP Lal Singh of being in "illegal" possession of 324 kanals and 7 marlas of land in Karandi Khurd, Jammu.
"Out of the 324 kanals and 7 marlas, one S Gurcharan Singh, a non-state subject owns 167 kanals and 15 marlas and another 92 kanals are state land," the complaint said. The complaint mentioned that Lal Singh being a public functionary misused his position to obtain unlawful gains for himself causing huge loss to the public exchequer.
Now when five years have passed since the complaint was registered, action against the accused continues to remain a distant dream with the people of the state hoping that the culprits will be brought to book.
As Lal Singh is an incumbent health minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, it remains to be seen how the chains would be broken to unveil the truth before the masses who have lost faith in the institutions of justice and fairplay.
