Early Times Report

Kishtwar, June 12: Four years since India's Prime government owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigham Limited (BSNL) launched 3G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir, the benefit of same remains confined to Jammu and Srinagar cities as BSNL fails to reach out to vast costumer base in other parts of the state including Kishtwar District.
The people of Kishtwar district were denied 3G services despite the fact that Kishtwar BSNL exchange was fully equipped with 3G a year before the company launched the 3G services in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per the details available with "Early Times", with the closing down of internet services by Tata Photon in Jammu and Kashmir, like people of other parts of the state; the people of Kishtwar District including people belonging to business community are looking forward for alternative services, but the government base telecom service provider BSNL has failed to reach out to the people of rural areas despite the fact that the company has launched its 3G services officially in Jammu and Kashmir in the month of July 2011.
BSNL is playing hide and seek with costumers of rural areas of the state including Kishtwar District and confined the benefit of the service to only few areas.
The sources informed the "Early Times", that the reason behind delayed tactics in providing the 3G services to rural areas of the state is a nexus between BSNL-Private Telecom service provider. As per the various public complaints, the private telecom service provide greases the palms of certain officials of BSNL in lieu of giving them an open hand in extending their customer base in rural areas of the state which is also evident from the record that private telecom companies like Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone, Tata Indicom and other private operators has increased its customer base many fold compared to BSNL, whose customer base in Jammu and Kashmir is shrinking every passing day.
Similar is the case with remote area of Kishtwar District where despite availability of 3G services, the BSNL failed to extend the same to its customers, the reasons best known to them while similar services was made operational in adjoining Doda District about two year ago. The people of Kishtwar in general complaint about the defunct BSNL network in Kishtwar District as a result of which the customers' faces lot of inconvenience due to call dropping and voice problem.
"We have opted for BSNL connection since it is the cheapest among the all" said Arif Bashir. He said that BSNL internet service also remains affected most of the time, thus causing lot of inconvenience to the people.
People associated with Chamber of Industries and Commerce also slam the BSNL for its poor services and demanded an immediate solution to the problem.
Meanwhile several people hailing from BSNL telecom circle Udhampur-Doda-Kishtwar complain that TDM Udhampur remain confined to his office and home at Udhampur and does not visit the areas falling under his jurisdiction so as to listen the public grievances.
As per the reports, in last two years, any TDM of BSNL Udhampur circle or Chief General Manager (CGM) of BSNL has hardly visited the Chenab valley. Not only CGM or TDM, even senior most officer of the department other then the two high level officer, no other officer visit to places like Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban.
"As and when I visited BSNL office at Kishtwar for clearance of my security deposits, they inform me that we have forwarded the documents to TDM office Udhampur for clearance of the same" said a BSNL customer. Similar was the tale narrated by hundreds of BSNL customers who are facing the brunt of apathy on part of BSNL officials.
Despite repeated attempts to reach out TDM Udhampur for his comment on his official landline number, he was not available for comment, thus justifying the allegations of general public complaints which claims that the officer prefer to remain confined himself at home and office and did not prefer to meet the common people so as to listen their grievances.
