ET Report
SRINAGAR, June 12: Contrary to the expectations the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state has led to polarization with the people of Jammu pitted against their counterparts of Kashmir.
The recent statement of Minister for Industries and Commerce, Chander Prakash Ganga that the announcement for establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jammu in a week or so has led to further division among the people of the two divisions of the state.
The establishment of AIIMS has already led to controversy among the people of Kashmir and Jammu divisions with the latest statement adding fuel to fire. There are people in Kashmir valley who opine and demand that institutions sanctioned for Jammu should also be set up in Kashmir as well.
This group of people says that institutions like Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) should set up in Kashmir since AIIMS is also coming up in Jammu now. These people say that BJP has played a 'fraud' by sanctioning AIIMS for Jammu since it was sanctioned for Kashmir only at the first instance.
Ever since the formation of PDP-BJP government controversies have started surfacing up. The assertion of some leaders that this government would bring people of Jammu close to Kashmir seems to be misplaced as on date. People of Jammu believe that Srinagar has got lion's share with respect to establishment of institutions and vice-versa.
Release of separatist Masarat Alam created ruckus in the state with BJP training guns on its coalition partner over the issue. The issue got complicated when Masarat raised slogans in favour of Pakistan during a rally that was held to welcome chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah after his return from Pakistan.
As soon as Masarat was re-arrested the tempers were cooled and BJP leaders heaved a sigh of relief. If the separatist leader would not have been re-arrested then the 'honeymoon' of PDP and BJP would have been long over. The alliance seems to be on tenterhooks and assumptions are that it can cave in at any point of time.
Among all the tricky issues the issue of establishment of AIIMS has hogged limelight with people of the two divisions pitted against each other. The issue continues to hit the headlines of the newspapers even today and there seems to be no end to this situation. It remains to be seen what would be the response of Kashmiris if and when the announcement of establishment of AIIMS in Jammu is made.
The leaders of PDP and BJP seem to be pitted against each other over the AIIMS issue, but none among them is serious in improving the standards of health institutions in the countryside and far-flung areas of the state. No suggestion whatsoever has been put forward by the ministers of either of these parties so that health scenario is improved across the length and breadth of the state.
