Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 12: There seems to be no end to waving of flags of Pakistan and Islamic State terrorist outfit in the Kashmir Valley.
On Friday, scores of youth took to streets in downtown Srinagar and volatile Sopore town of north Kashmir and staged anti-India protests. Shouting pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans, the protesters waved ISIS and Pakistani flags, eyewitnesses told Early Times.
In Srinagar, flags of ISIS and Pakistan appeared during protests near the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area where from trend to brandish ISIS flags in Kashmir started last year.
The protesting youths also attacked police and paramilitary troopers with stones, and the pitched clashes continued for some hours, said the eyewitnesses.
Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani had called for protests after the Friday prayers. Chairman of moderate separatist faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is also Kashmir's chief priest, took out a rally from Jamia Masjid where he delivers Friday sermon.
However, the chaos which prevailed after youth started waving Pakistani and ISIS flags restricted the rally of Mirwaiz to Nowhatta area only.
Reports from Sopore town, where an activist of Geelani's Hurriyat was shot dead by unidentified gunmen this week, said that Pakistani flags were waved by youth in main town amid anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans. However, according to sources, police and paramilitary troopers maintained restraint during the clashes.
It may be mentioned that in past few months, Pakistani flags were raised in many rallies of separatist leaders in Kashmir. The issue of raising Pakistani flags compelled the PDP-BJP government to re-arrest noted separatist leader Masarat Alam within days of his release from jail. Alam was accused of waving Pakistani flags in a rally to welcome Geelani on his arrival in Srinagar from New Delhi.
Meanwhile, as Geelani had called for protests after Friday prayers, scores of activists of his group held protests at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, against the killing of their colleague Sheikh Altaf-ur-Rehman.
The activists assembled in Pratap Park soon after the Friday prayers and started shouting anti-India and pro-azadi slogans. They tried to march towards Residency Road, but cops on duty detained them and bundled them in vehicles.
The protestors were demanding to bring killers of Altaf to book and release of separatist leaders who are under house detention.
