In times of metro, CM's neighbourhood sans public transport | | | Bijay Charak Jammu, Aug 24: Even as the State Government is flirting with the idea of metro services in Srinagar and Jammu cities, Chief Minister's neighbourhood including Qasim Nagar, Gujjar Nagar and Peer Kho are facing hardships without any public transport facility. More interestingly all these localities are situated nearly one and half kilometer from the residence of Chief Minister. Contrary to public observation that Jammu has huge fleet of public transport, the passengers are uncomfortable while commuting through the town. The ordeal starts on venturing to take a minibus during peak hours on some busy route. A passenger feels like beating his head when a minibus takes an hour to cover a distance of two kilometers. Vivekanand Chowk via Gujjar Nagar - Peer Kho route and Qasim Nagar via Gujjar Nagar - Panjtirthi route are some of the routes facing the highhandedness of public transport service, which still sans any public transport facility after 65 years of independence. Mohd Aslam a resident of Gujjar Nagar said, "All this is because of corruption prevailing in the traffic police department and due to flourishing nexus between the public transport operators-traffic police-transport authorities, who are responsible for chaotic condition of public transport system". People in these areas have to walk miles to board a minibus from other routes. In the absence of any public transport facility in the said areas, the hapless people who don't own vehicles have to bear the brunt of the official apathy. Due to this, the students, employees and other commuters have to foot the distance for reaching their respective destinations. Old aged and women with children suffer badly in such circumstances. Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Qasim Nagar said that he has to walk for half an hour to reach University gate to board the minibus causing delay invariably in reaching his office. Rajesh Sharma, resident of Peer Kho is one of the senior citizens who has to undertake painful walks to board a vehicle. Ravinder Singh an operator of minibus said that at some routes operational cost was more, so plying minibus on such routes causes loss to the operator. Keeping in view the increasing oil prices, we are left with no option other than to change the route, he said. Arvind Kotwal RTO Jammu, he said that no permit has been issued on above said routes.
