Early Times Report
ANANTNAG, Aug 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also happens to be the Minister of Information, was subjected to a brazen insult by the Department of Information as his public address system failed in the thick of a public meeting at Adar, near the PDP patriarch Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's hometown of Bijbehara today.
An infuriated Chief Minister left the venue in a huff and drove straight to Srinagar airport to board a Jammu-bound helicopter. Sources said that senior Government functionaries scolded officials of Information Department and District administration for the "intolerable careless" shown by them to the head of the State Government.
An inquiry, to be conducted by Deputy Director Information Kashmir Division Shafqat Iqbal, was ordered into the conduct of the officials responsible even as a higher level Government action was likely against Director Information Zaffar Ahmad Bhat as well as DC Anantnag Farooq Lone who has previously served two tenures as Deputy Director of Information.
District Information Officer Tanvir Ahmed and three other officials of Information Department were placed under suspension with immediate effect. Even as a senior bureaucrat in CM's Secretariat was reportedly shielding Bhat and Lone, sources said that disciplinary action was imminent against both.
A senior official said that the Chief Minister got irritated with the public address system went out of order when he was about to deliver his speech.
"As Chief Minister was about to address public gathering in the Adar area of Bijbehara, one of the amplifiers of public address system developed some technical fault when district president of National Conference Mohammad Akbar Ganai was addressing the gathering," the official said. He said that the CM left the venue out of anger without addressing people who were waiting since morning.
"We had installed the public address system last night as a cultural programme was scheduled to start at 9.00 a.m. But unfortunately, when CM was about to speak one of the amplifiers stopped working," DIO Tanvir Ahmad was quoted to have told a news agency. "Suddenly, all other amplifiers failed. It appears that somebody had done a mischief".
"The department has initiated enquiry against me and I believe some miscreants who were part of gathering have done the job," Tanveer reportedly told.
When contacted Director Information, Kashmir, Zaffar Bhat, said we are ascertaining the facts how ths PAS failed.
Earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid foundation stones of Trauma Hospital at Fruit Mandi, Jablipora and Adar-Seepan bridge in Bijbehara. He also inaugurated the Government Degree College building in Bijbehara.
