Unscheduled power cuts irk Kupwara villagers
4/6/2014 10:47:33 PM
Syed Tahir Bukhari

KUPWARA, Apr 6: People of several villages of this frontier district are up in arms against the Power Development Department (PDD) for resorting to unscheduled power cuts. Unscheduled and long power cuts have become a regular feature in the district.
Avoora, a revenue village just seven kilometers away from district headquarters with its adjoining areas, Mir Muqam, Munwan, Reshwari ,Muqam, Dar Mohalla and Harkarpora has been left in darkness because of high political drama on the ground which is hardly seen anywhere.
A local Mohammad Shafi Khan alleges, "The currently installed 63 KV transformer often fails thus plunging three localities comprising of 42 households into darkness. We are facing discrimination on electricity front. Our nearby Peer Mohallah has 250 KV transformers for 45 consumers it is because they are National Conference supporters. We are facing major power crisis as transformer of our area failed three times in fifteen days."
Shafi said that they called up the local MLA Mir Saifullah many times but of no avail. He said the NC supporters have made it clear to them that they would be deprived of efficient power supply as long as they remain aloof from supporting the party.
Shabir Ahmad Mir, a local said that the mechanical engineers use sub standard material for repairing of transformers leading to frequent damage to transformers. Shabir said that despite paying hefty electric bills people face acute shortage of power. He alleged that PDD authorities seem to be least bothered about their sufferings.
Locals of Mir Muqaam said that they are living in Stone Age as transformers that got damaged in early winter are yet to be repaired at Tiker workshop in the district. They said the transformer of Reshwari is awaiting upliftment for repairing since months after it developed some fault. They said that transformer of Mohallah Mawan was lifted after two months.
According to officials, around 45 transformers of different areas of Kupwara district are presently lying in electrical workshop for repairing.
"We are repairing the transformers serial wise and there no poor effort on part of authorities in lifting of transformers where got damaged. But the transformer of these Mohallah's will be re installed shortly," said an official of PDD.
When contacted in-charge Executive Engineer PDD Kupwara, Javid Ahmad said, "We do repair electric transformers at central workshop Srinagar and also at the local workshop here in Kupwara, but these transformers does not resist for long because of heavy overloading."
The Executive Engineer said that they are not purchasing material at their own level and it is received from centralized purchase committee. He said there is no matter of using any sub standard material.
