ARO Gandhi Nagar seizes Rs 10 lakh cash from Panama Chowk 4/6/2014 11:52:26 PM Asif Iqbal Naik JAMMU, Apr 6: Continuing its drive against offenders and violators of Model Code of Conduct, the ARO-71 Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, Rajesh Kumar Shavan recovered a cash of Rs 10 lakh from a vehicle near Panama Chowk here. Reports said that Shavan in a Naka laid by him along with the flying squad members Dr. Ravi Bharti, G D Gupta Sector Magistrate, police officer Khalid Qayoom and Joginder Singh recovered Rs. 10 lakh from vehicle bearing registration number JK02M-6140 (Maruti 800) near Panama Chowk. As per the details available with Early Times on suspicion the vehicle carrying the cash was signaled to stop near Panama Chowk at around 9.40 PM and on frisking it led to seizure of 10 lakh rupees. The driver of the vehicle disclosed his identity as Rajesh Kumar son of Tilak Raj Gupta resident of Rehari Colony. Tilak claimed that he is an owner of shop in Fruit Mandi. He failed to provide a convincing answer about the cash being carried by him and also the purpose of the same. The matter was immediately brought into the notice of District Election Officer, Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu by Assistant Returning Officer 71 Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Income tax officers were rushed immediately to take cognizance of the matter and scrutinize it as per rules. As per the directives of Election Commission of India, no one can carry cash exceeding Rs. 50,000. Any amount beyond Rs. 50,000 will come under the ambit of MCC and warranted scrutiny under law. It is pertinent to mention that the special drive has been launched in the entire AC segment to detect the movement of any unauthorized election material, cash and liquor to strictly enforce the Model Code of Conduct. Tonight's recovery of cash is the second one over the last one week.
