Crumbling coalition faces evaluation | | |
Mustansir Jammu, Apr 6: With just a few days left before the country votes for the Lok Sabha elections, officials in Jammu and Kashmir said they are ready to face the biggest election of the world has ever seen. Returning officer from Poonch district, Ajeet Kumar Sahu, said the arrangements for elections were in place. "All arrangements are in place. The electoral rolls are ready. We have distributed the photo voter slips used as an alternate identity proof yesterday to all voters of the area," Sahu added. Sahu further said, the officials had campaigned for a good electoral turnout at polling booths that used to experience low number of voters. "For a good turnout we have made a plan under which we identified the booth with lower voter turnout, our officials campaigned personally for those booths," added Sahu. Meanwhile, commander of 16 Corps Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh said, they are prepared for any attempts of disruptions as far as the security is concerned. "We have an effective infiltration grid in place and our network is also effective and is in excellent coordination and security situation is under control, " Singh added. Meanwhile, on the ground the ruling NC-Congress coalition fighting the elections in alliance for the second time is only months away from completing its term in government. The alliance will surely have a tough time in this election. Having taken over the reins of the state in 2008, the coalition was not being evaluated for the time it had spent in government in 2009. However, this time around Omar government is facing a strong anti-incumbency factor in almost every constituency of the state. The disillusionment is visible on the ground. "The Omar government is a complete failure. The government has done nothing for the people," says Gh. Mohi-ud-din, a shopkeeper in the Hazratbal area of the Srinagar. His sentiments are reverberated by many others from different backgrounds. The situation, however, is not as embarrassing for the coalition as a whole for there is a face in Gh. Nabi Azad who is revered across the state and is seen as a clean and developmental man in the state.
