Saroori threatens protest, blames GREF for poor road network

Jammu, Apr 6: Reacting to the "Early Times" report " titled "GREF fails people, retention walls at Pul Doda collapse--- Rs 40 Cr go down the drain" published in 2-4-2014 and public complaints, Former R&B Minister and Congress MLA Inderwal Ghulam Mohammad Saroori today threaten to protest and blame the central agency General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) authorities for worst condition of roads in entire Kishtwar and Doda region and demanded independent probe against the executing agency.Saroori fumed after his cavalcade was stopped twice due to landslides and shooting stones on Kishtwar-Thatri road stretch of Kishtwar-Batote National Highway where he was schedule to address a series of public meetings in favour of Congress candidate from Udhampur-Doda parliament seat Ghulam Nabi Azad.Saroori while talking to "Early Times" said that several people en-route to Thatri and Chatroo stopped his cavalcade and complained about bad roads, non-availability of Ration and non-clearance of slips on PMGSY and JKPCC roads including Bunjwah, Thalaran, Kuchhal roads. "GREF which is responsible for maintaining 110 KM Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway and 85 KM Kishtwar-Sinthan road are using sub standard material in construction work, beside fail to maintain the surface of the said road as a result of which local people suffers badly" said angry Saroori. He said that Batote-Kishtwar road stretch is in shamble condition and has sunk at more than 20 places added that the landslides have become order of day. Saroori also shows anger towards GREF for their failure in making a comprehensive plan to tackle with the issue of continuous road blockade on these two important road stretches connecting the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar having population of over 7 lakh souls with the rest of the state.He said that the work executed by the GREF needs to be looked into seriously, particularly with respect to the use of sub standard material in construction work by the authorities and seek a detail and independent probe against this central agency. He said that last year he also caught GREF contractor red handed while using sub standard material in construction work. Saroori also issued an ultimatum to GREF authorities to either improve the quality of work and maintain the road surface, or be ready to face the public wrath. He said that despite the matter has been bought into the notice of higher authorities of the District, state and GREF authorities, nothing was done on ground which indicates that all were hand in glove and shielding the corrupt officials. He also demanded immediate restoration of 85 KM Kishtwar-Sinthan road on war footing bases. Sighting "Early Times" report, Saroori said that even the Traffic police authority believes that this National Highway is vulnerable to the threat to human life as many hanging stones and rocks continuously threatening the stability of the road and can invite an accident any time and added that the same required proper and immediate attention.Later he addressed various public meetings in Inderwal Constituency and urged the voters to rise above party lines at this juncture and join hands to defeat the divisive forces who want to divide people on religious bases.
He asked people to come in large numbers and use their right to vote in favor of Congress candidate Azad on 17thApril. It is pertinent to mention that after "Early Times" report, Civil society members in Doda, Bhaderwah and Public Awareness Front Kishtwar held a strong protest against GREF authorities demanding immediate restoration of Kishtwar-Doda-Batote National Highway, beside action against officials involved behind using sub standard material in construction work.
